Pakistan Heading Toward Islamist State (click for full story)

WASHINGTON (FROM MCCLATCHY)— A growing number of U.S. intelligence, defense and diplomatic officials have concluded that there's little hope of preventing nuclear-armed Pakistan from disintegrating into fiefdoms controlled by Islamist warlords and terrorists, posing the a greater threat to the U.S. than Afghanistan's terrorist haven did before 9/11.

"It's a disaster in the making on the scale of the Iranian revolution," said a U.S. intelligence official with long experience in Pakistan who requested anonymity because he wasn't authorized to speak publicly.

Pakistan's fragmentation into warlord-run fiefdoms that host al Qaida and other terrorist groups would have grave implications for the security of its nuclear arsenal; for the U.S.-led effort to pacify Afghanistan ; and for the security of India , the nearby oil-rich Persian Gulf and Central Asia , the U.S. and its allies.

" Pakistan has 173 million people and 100 nuclear weapons, an army which is bigger than the American army, and the headquarters of al Qaida sitting in two-thirds of the country which the government does not control," said David Kilcullen , a retired Australian army officer, a former State Department adviser and a counterinsurgency consultant to the Obama administration.

" Pakistan isn't Afghanistan , a backward, isolated, landlocked place that outsiders get interested in about once a century," agreed the U.S. intelligence official. "It's a developed state . . . (with) a major Indian Ocean port and ties to the outside world, especially the (Persian) Gulf, that Afghanistan and the Taliban never had."

I just read this so it was neat seeing it on your site. NOT good news if it's true. I hate Islamic states.

Yeah, states based on any religion are very...difficult to maneuver. And Pakistan (the name Pakistan means "pure land" and was created to be a country by Muslims for Muslims...) is SUCH a key ally in the region...to lose them would...well, it would be a "game changer" to say the least.

I didn't realize Pakistan meant that or that it was created by Muslims to be for Muslims. Hmmmm. Thank you for sharing that with me.

People tell me that Islamic states should be so wonderful and tolerable to unbelievers (non Muslims of course), but I am not convinced based on the Islamic states that I see. Granted I know the media portrays the worse kinds, but still. It seems when Muslims come to power, they are mean to kuffir. And don't get me started on how they treat people who leave Islam. My thoughts ... if your God is so great, He knows when people's hearts have already left "the religion." So why force them to be Muslim in name when in their hearts God knows they are NOT Muslims at all?

I just don't understand why HUMANS have a right to kill for the sake of family honor especially in regards to such thing as leaving the religion you were born into. Yes, BORN into...these people never had choices about whether they wanted to follow Muhammad, Jesus, Buddha or Joseph Smith or no one at all.

It's all just frustrating to me. I guess I am too geared towards freedom of choice in regards to spiritual beliefs. Like GOD can actually guide people to Himself and doesn't need the local tribes to corral the masses and keep them within the folds.

Wow, sorry for the long comment. Thanks for explaining what you did about Pakistan.
